#28 To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow – Audrey Hepburn

Jaya has always been passionate about gardening, and I attributed that to a mere hobby, albeit a passionate one. When I came across this quote, it made me think. Unlike other hobbies, e.g., photography (my hobby), is there something more divine or at the least sublime about this endeavor gardening. While one can argue if a something started as a hobby becomes passion or passion drives one to pursue a hobby.

As you can see in the photos below, her hard work, love for gardening and passion comes through and through.

As I was ruminating about Ms. Hepburn’s quote, I felt our passions can be classified broadly into two categories: self-satisfying and self-satisfying with an added dimension of nobility associated with the passion (a noble passion, perhaps). As I in About me section on this stie, photography is my passion, and it is a very satisfying one, I hasten to add. Jaya’s passion of gardening and for that matter, all those whose passion is gardening, have a halo of nobility within the context of Ms. Hepburn’s quote. That thinking may have crept albeit sub-consciously into her psyche and prompted her to be an elementary school teacher. The same can be said about some of friends who pursue their passion of helping others, some more relentless than the others.

I thought I found a purpose in life with my passionate hobby. As I realized that my passion is not necessarily a noble passion, my hubris started to dissolve. I have respect for all those who follow their passion, and I have a greater respect for those whose passion is noble. They are to create a tomorrow, better yet a better tomorrow. I bow to them with all humility though they may not realize their passion is a noble pursuit.
